This drink is not mine. A good friend and one of the owners of the Whistler, Billy Helmkamp, came up with this smooth sipping winner about ten years ago. I mentioned him last week on the blog when I was talking about bars that keep their sidewalks clean. Billy has been at it for a long time in the Windy City. If you get lucky you can still catch him making drinks at the Whiz if someone calls in sick. A treat indeed.
He says the idea came from a post work Boulevardier and subbing out the bitter Campari for some vegital Cynar on a whim. Thinking that the artichoke based Cynar could use a "veggie friend to keep it company" he dropped in a slice of cucumber and the Arrigo Park was born.
In a Chilled and Iced Mixing Glass:
45 ml Rye Whiskey
22 ml Carpano Antica
15 ml Cynar
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled rocks glass.
Garnish with a cucumber slice.
Note: No ice in the rocks glass. Sazerac style. Or "neat rocks" as Billy would say.
Try it out,
