There used to be a time when I could drink more than I could today. Now if I have a drop too much I am in for a world of hurt the next day. It may not even be apparent when I go to bed. No slurring or common actions of inebriation.
One thing I have begun to enjoy are weak drinks. I am not talking about the dreaded and cowardly half and half martini or reverse manhattans. I am speaking of simple highballs that can be made weaker. These days I would rather stomach a loaded bases worth of highballs made with 20 ml (a touch over half an ounce) of blended Scotch and some fizzy chilly soda water than one with 60 ml ( ~2 ounces) of the hard stuff. I find the weaker ones more refreshing and I have always believed the key point of a highball is effervescence. I can also enjoy three of them as opposed to choking down just one on a hot day. I believe Winston Churchill would agree with me on this style of drinking if he was still around.
I tend to enjoy a small Fino or Manzanilla sherry in place of a second dry martini before dinner. The one true strong cocktail I enjoy the most. The second martini tries to put me in the ground every time I attempt it and I am not one for watering down my silver bullet. I then move on to wine for dinner (still or sparkling) and very rarely I will end the day with a small pour of French Brandy.
In a Collins Glass:
20 ml Blended Scotch Whiskey
Top With Cold Carbonated Water
Use a bar spoon to place a large piece of ice gently on the top of the drink.
Toss in a lemon peel if you have time. I never do.
Another drink to talk about is the weak spritz. The Italian highball. It may be heresy but I don't believe the sparkling wine is always necessary. A red bitter or sweet vermouth and soda is just as lovely without the usually flat Prosecco dumped into your drink at most American bars. At home, it is kind of a bother keeping up with fresh soda and sparkling wine for one or two drinks. When drinking with a group of people, pop the bottle and do it up but on your own, I think the reigns can be pulled back a touch without sacrificing enjoyment. The spritz was never intended to get you drunk...it was only to prepare you for getting drunk at dinner.
Don't measure your spritz. There is never any need. A good heavy splash of red or pink over ice and then top it off with fizzy. Toss in some citrus and you are good to go. The negroni is a whole different can of worms and if you can't take that at full strength responsibly order something else like the americano or a vermouth on the rocks.
